The HFA4-AVR is the rechaegable model; it now features an internally mounted 10 cell AAA size 180mAH NiCad battery array in a battery holder, custom built for this application, and the internal circuitry to recharge this battery internally from either the "Wall Wart", with an optional Auto power cord, or with a solar photo-voltaic panel. (Cells can be replaced if it later becomes necessary.)
In the photo below, you see the earlier model M-1700 with a readout of 379. KHz; above the meter and Zapper HFA-4 is an oscilloscope, showing the waveform at this frequency.
Special added output buffering and driving circuitry speeds up the rise time of the output waveform, and allows for a solid square wave output, even at these higher operating frequencies.
The photo on the left shows the fast 75nS rise time of the output square wave when running at 423KHz. The photo on the right shows the output waveform at 1056KHz (1.056MHz) . Zapper HFA-4 models shipping now produce a stable output waveform typically at well over 1 MHz, depending on the characteristics of the specific components in the specific unit.
Radio Shack is now selling the TS22-811 handheld meter for $49.99. It reads frequency (to 2MHz?). I've been told that it seems to do the job well with the Zappers.
The Zapper HFA-4's circuitry is housed in an ABS plastic housing with a built in battery compartment on the AV models, and now has three pairs of output jacks on the bottom edge of the updated front panel, which accept standard tip plugs. A pair of tubular Stainless Steel external hand pieces are provided. A variety of your own contact pads can be simply made & plugged into these jacks.
Three high efficiency LED indicators are built into both models;
[1] an ON indicator, located between the output jacks, that is driven directly by the pulsed DC output signal - you can see it pulse at low frequencies;
[2] a "Output Voltage Level Lower Than" indicator, which begins to glow red as the internal battery voltage drops below 7.15VDC on the AV models, and below 10.0 volts on the latest AVR models with the internal 10 cell rechargable NICAD battery. This indicates when to replace the 9 volt battery on the AV models, or when to recharge the internal battery on the AVR models.
A third LED indicator has now been added to both models, and is lit whenever the external supply coaxial power jack actually has power applied to it.
A "wall wart" transformer is included with all Zapper HFA-4 models now being shipped; a coax power jack is built into one side of the case; 2.5mm center = + ; 5.5mm outside diameter = ground. When using the wall wart, the output voltage level is adjustable on all models from 5 volts up to about 15 volts.
Technical Note: when testing output voltage with a digital multimeter, the reading will be about half of the actual pulse amplitude, due to the ~50% duty cycle of the pulsed DC square wave output, which is averaged over a set measurement period within the meter. An oscilloscope shows the actual output waveform amplitude nicely.
On the HFA-4AVR model, when using the custom built 10 cell nicad rechargable battery, the output voltage level is adjustable from 5 volts up to about 11.4 volts. The extra amplitude may be far more effective in inducing resonances into the body.
(Why 10 cells? This is about the maximum that can be effectively charged with the car cord when your vehicle is running, or a photo voltaic panel. It also charges from the 'wall wart' very nicely.) If you want the extra voltage output available from this battery, or if you're tired of throwing away batteries, this may be the model you want.
Please understand that, unlike the classic Hulda Clark Zapper design, this Zapper HFA-4 is designed with added output drive capability . Internally, there's just enough current limiting provided to protect the circuitry from damage if the hand pieces or contract pads should happen to touch while the Zapper HFA-4 is turned on. This provides the fastest rise time to the output waveform - the squarest square wave. The HFA-4 is designed as a high output research device, and is therefore capable of putting out more signal strength than you would want to use in other than hand-to-hand zapping applications. Sometimes, especially when working with small surface area contact pads, or on sensitive parts of the anatomy, full power output will be too much...
Another advanced design feature that's incorporated into the Zapper HFA-4: The output power level adjustment can be achieved by varying the output *voltage amplitude*, rather than by adding extra resistance in the output signal path, which is the usual technique used in other Zapper designs. This has been observed with an oscilloscope in testing to help keep the signal induced into the body much 'squarer' - less rounding / softening of the square wave leading edge, which should result in a more effective signal being induced into the body. (This is most obvious when viewed on an oscilloscope at the higher frequencies.)
In hand- to- hand 'zapping' at higher frequencies, most people can handle more current drive than on other more delicate parts of the body... With the HFA-4 running on the 'wall wart' supply, the output peak voltage amplitude can be adjusted to anywhere from a maximum of about 14 volts down to about 5 volts; only a 130 ohm 'short circuit protection' resistor is in the output path, to avoid damage to the internal circuitry if the hand pieces or pads are shorted together.
Note that, (especially for those who consume a fairly high amount of salt in their diet) some might experience too much current flow on parts of their body where pad contacts are placed if the output voltage is used at maximum on the ‘wall wart' supply. This seems to first be noted at the negatively charged pad, and begins to feel like an insect is starting to gnaw on a point under the pad, or right at the edge of the pad. It usually is not noted when you first turn on the device, but rather after a few minutes. You need to be aware that, with this expanded capability device, setting the output level to what your body can handle is necessary, much the same as is common practice with many TENS units and ‘Nerve Stimulation' devices in use today. You may not be able to use this device with the outputs set at maximum; small electrical burns can result.
If you begin to feel this ‘biting bug' sensation, immediately move the pad to a different location and adjust the output power / voltage down a bit. If the zapping session has been on for 7 minutes, it's time for a break. Extended application times spoken of by others can only be used at reduced power levels. Also, please DON'T FALL ASLEEP while using this device on a high power setting! Electrical burns at more conductive points on your skin can result from ignoring the ‘biting bug' sensation.
By reducing or varying the output voltage/ peak amplitude, rather than adding current limiting, the output waveform *as picked up in the body* should have a much faster leading edge than one affected by resistance added in the signal path, which is theorized to help produce more of the desirable higher frequency harmonics. Extra current limiting resistance can still be added if you choose, in the leads going out to the hand pieces or pads; This is, after all, an experimental / research device; how you choose to use it is completely within your control.
While Hulda Clark says that anything from 5 to 10 volts is her recommendation to use for Zapping, I'm beginning to feel that about 8 volts is the minimum I want to personally use for Zapping. I & friends are currently using 10 to 14 volts more of the time, with more dramatic results than at lower voltages (a bit subjective at this point, but a subject for further research & scrutiny...) The Zapper HFA-4 models allow you to pursue your own research applications with this implementation of the adjustable output voltage feature.

The HFA-4 also now includes newly enhanced extra voltage regulated charging circuitry. The case is dimensioned internally to allow this larger custom battery to be mounted inside the compact housing. Control panel component layouts have also been rearranged in the process. For this reason, and also that other parts of the circuitry are designed & built to match up with this larger capacity battery, the rechargable battery can not be added later to an HFA-4AV device.
